The Power of Storytelling in Wedding Videography / Caitlin and Luke

You know I love a celebrant-led wedding - and one of the reasons is how personal they can be. Luke and Caitlin’s wedding ceremony was led by Gerri, from Making Memories by Gerri. I loved what she had to say about the meaning and value of words, and the power of stories.

“The stories couples tell of finding each other, falling in love, and committing to each other are incredibly valuable. They bring back happy memories, and they make people smile. But they also become part of the folklore of their marriage… Today is one brief day in time but the promises you are about to make will last a lifetime. The promises may be simple words, but they have extraordinary meaning and importance. These promises are words which will bind you together. Today is a celebration; a celebration of love, of commitment, of friendship, of family, and two people who are in it forever.”

Yes, Gerri! I couldn’t have put it better myself.

Stories are how we make sense of the world, they’re how we share with others across space and time. Folklore is sharing cultures and traditions, and by speaking our stories aloud, we get to distill our pasts and shape our future. Stories are passion and memories, and they bring people together. Storytelling creates touchstones in our relationships and our lives that let us know what it's all about.

The power of storytelling differentiates wedding videography from the churn of social media content to something that holds legacy too.

I use a lot of audio from your ceremony and speeches to tell this story in your highlight film. The readings you might choose from the people you might choose to read them, that just sum you up. The people you choose to speak, and the anecdotes they might tell about when you first met. The laughs in the background, and the applause, and maybe a few tears too.

But it’s not just the audio that can tell a story. The decor and stationery you choose can tell your story too, and offer nods to who you are outside of the wedding hubbub. Tables named after holiday destinations, rustic decor to hark back to first-date walks, signature cocktails, or a box of props for the dancefloor; there are loads to add in visual elements of your story too. Whatever you choose, keeping it personal makes it meaningful, by dint of you having chosen it. The words you say are important because you’ve said them.

Your story is important because it’s yours - I won’t dictate to you how to tell it, just capture it when you do.
